Parent Assistant Program

Background:

  • The Parent Assistant plays a significant role in the success of any Language Stars At School program!

  • We developed our Parent Assistant program specifically because it allows Language Stars to offer the highest quality foreign language immersion programs.

  • Parent Assistants play a critical role in maintaining a strong group dynamic. They allow our native-speaking teachers to remain focused on learning goals and activities, and ultimately on students’ progress.

  • The Parent Assistant provides a link to the school administration, ensuring seamless communication and satisfaction between Language Stars and the school.

  • The Parent Assistant ensures the safety and well-being of our students, particularly at drop-off and pick-up.

Profile:

  • We do not require the Parent Assistant to speak the language fluently (though it’s a plus!)

  • Rather, we seek a Parent Assistant whose primary motivation is to learn the language alongside his/her child while having fun.

  • An effective Parent Assistant is also willing to actively manage a dynamic classroom.

Program Support:

  • Actively participate: Respond to teacher prompts, and keep children focused during class.

  • Model activity with teacher

    • E.g., Model how to play “Pin the Tail” as the teacher’s first volunteer while repeating the verse in song.

    • Model positive behavior, and assist your Language Stars teacher with any challenging behavior.

    • Have chatty/disruptive children sit next to you

    • Speak to disruptive children quietly in English to remind them of Language Stars rules:

      • Rabbit Rule: Listen with your ears!

      • Octopus Rule: Keep your hands to yourself!

      • Turtle Rule: Stay with the group

  • Help with materials used in class (passing out items, etc.)

  • Dress comfortably, sit in the circle on the carpet

  • Take children to the bathroom.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Attend all Language Stars classes for the entire length of class. If you will be absent, notify Language Stars and work with other parents to identify and schedule a substitute.

  • Ensure appropriate drop-off and pick-up of children

    • E.g., If before-school program, work with school to ensure that children get to their classrooms at the beginning of school.

    • E.g., If after-school program, work with school to ensure that children get from their classrooms to the Language Stars classroom.

    • E.g., If some participants are in another after-school program, ensure that the appropriate children are brought to Language Stars from the after-school program and/or brought back to the after-school program.

  • Ensure child supervision and safety in the unexpected situation where a teacher is delayed/absent.
